The main aim of homework is to reinforce or review learning and teaching and in the process:
- Support and build on class work;
- Encourage children to work independently;
- Promote good study habits;
- Offer access to resources not available in school e.g. interview with parents; grandparents/members of the local community;
- Provide opportunities for individualised learning;
- Encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own learning;
- Train pupils to plan and organise their time effectively;
- Inform parents of the work children are undertaking in school;
- Develop home school links
Thereby raising levels of attainment and achievement.
In our school, homework can be given on up to four evenings per week. In Primary including K.G. Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3, homework should not take longer than 20 minutes and in Primary Year 4, 5 and 6, it should not take longer than 45 minutes.
At times, our children are also asked to participate in home study. This is a three – four week programme of shared learning that is given to the children to allow them to share home study tasks with their family. This has been a very popular and successful programme. It may include Science projects, History demonstrations, Geography models.
Parents are asked to foster an enjoyment of reading in their children and this can be done by spending ten or fifteen minutes, two or three times per week, reading to your children or getting your child to read to you.
Parents or interested adults who can make this commitment will be doing a great deal to enhance their children’s learning.
- Home learning (Homework) will be shared by teachers on Kinderpedia with parents.
- Home Learning to be returned by the deadline agreed with the teacher.
- Home Learning will be reviewed/checked and feedback given to each student.
- Short summary report with feedback will be shared with each individual student.
- No student should engage in new Home Learning without receiving feedback from all teachers.
Home Learning activities to be high standard, well executed by students, have built in revision and challenge and include research and inquiry.
